Experiencing Personal Growth with Equine Therapy
In May, our Psychiatric Rehabilitation Program (PRP) team took a group of young adult clients to Idylwild Farm for equine therapy. Thanks to the Healthy Transitions grant, we’ve established a valuable partnership with Lisa May, LCSW-C, a licensed social worker and farm owner in Federalsburg specializing in equine therapy. Lisa has been counseling our Transitional Aged Youth (TAY) clients every Tuesday in May, leading activities focused on expanding social skills and encouraging teamwork through tasks like grooming and leading the horses. Like two members of our staff, Lisa May was recently honored with a 2025 Caliber Award by Mid Shore Behavioral Health for her work supporting wellness in the mid-shore.
It is truly extraordinary to see clients who swore they would never get close to a horse connecting, caring for, and attending to these powerful, emotive creatures. Staff were particularly proud of one client, who stepped up to lead the exercises when her peers were struggling. It was a beautiful day and a wonderful example of how a new experience can bring clients together!
